WHEN CARMEN HEARD THE water running in the shower, she grabbed her phone and dialled.

“About time you phoned.” His tone was gruff, almost unrecognizable. “Come to your senses yet?”

“You’ve got to stop this,” Carmen said, hating that her voice wasn’t stronger. Hating there was a quiver of fear in it.

“I’m not going to stop. Not until you accept my apology and take me back.”

“I’ll accept your apology, Billy, but I’m never taking you back.”

“Carmen. Come on. We had a good thing, don’t ruin it because you’re being stubborn.”

“We didn’t!” Carmen fought to keep her voice from going shrill. “We didn’t have a good thing, Billy. I was miserable. We were both miserable. Now you have got to let this go. I don’t want to see you again. Stay away from me and stay away from Sawyer.”

The water turned off. Carmen hung up without waiting for an answer.
